Cleveland, Ohio’s vibrant downtown has been gaining energy in recent years with the return of Lebron James, trendy new restaurants and shopping districts. Planning officials in Cleveland – just a half hour from Avery Dennison Graphics Solutions headquarters in Mentor – have been seeking ways to reflect that energy and create welcoming gateways into the city’s downtown.
Avery Dennison was the featured product on one of Cleveland’s first projects. The North Coast Harbor Regional Transit Authority (RTA) station was transformed into a beacon of color and light to bring attention to the station and improve pedestrian experience.
The project was designed by two local artists to create a colorful attraction to what has been an uninteresting landmark. Permanent LED lighting was designed by Ron Friedman of Art and Science Lighting and the colored vinyl patterning was designed by Christine Wisnieski, who was inspired by Avery Dennison’s extensive color palette for cast and calendered vinyl films.
“Avery Dennison’s vinyl product allowed LAND studio to create a high-impact, temporary public art installation in downtown Cleveland,” said Erin Guido, project manager with LAND Studio, who led the project. “Inspired by its unlimited color palette local artist Christine Wisnieski used the material to create different effects on two sides of an RTA station on East 9th Street – stained glass on one side, and saturated color on the other. This versatile material provided LAND studio and the artist with a reasonably-priced option to create a visual point of interest in the downtown landscape.”
